Clean Water Action
JOB ANNOUNCEMENT
Posting Date: March 21, 2003
Closing Date: April 18, 2003 (or until position is filled)
Position: ASSOCIATE STATE DIRECTOR/SPECIAL PROJECTS TEAM
Clean Water Action seeks an experienced manager to assist in directing
Clean Water's Michigan operations and to be part of an exciting new
national project team.
Location:
One of Clean Water Action's Michigan offices (to be determined), which are
currently located in East Lansing, Grand Rapids, and Clinton
Township. In-state and out-state travel required.
CLEAN WATER ACTION. Clean Water Action is a national citizens' organization
working for clean, safe and affordable water, prevention of
health-threatening pollution, creation of environmentally safe jobs and
businesses, election of pro-environment candidates, and empowerment of
people to make democracy work. CWA organizes strong grassroots groups,
coalitions and campaigns to protect our environment, health, economic
well-being and community quality of life. CWA nationally has staff in 27
offices and over 700,000 members concentrated in 18 states and the District
of Columbia. Michigan CWA has over 100,000 members. www.cleanwateraction.org.
RESPONSIBILITIES. In coordination with Michigan CWA's State Director,
share responsibility for leading and developing Clean Water's Michigan
activities while also participating in campaigns and other special projects
in the Midwest and potentially elsewhere. Specific responsibilities may
include:
Develop and implement fundraising plans in coordination with State Director
In partnership with national financial and administrative staff, develop
and oversee administrative and financial management systems and strategies
-- including budgets and other planning and monitoring tools -- as required
for sound management of fiscal and other organizational resources
Help recruit, supervise, train, and mentor staff
Coordinate aspects of campaigns
Research, write and edit a wide range of documents (e.g., external
newsletters, program materials, press releases, reports, internal
communications, etc.)
Provide leadership and support for canvass programs and staff
Recruit and work with volunteer leaders to develop local, state, and
regional non-staff leadership structures to guide and advance Clean Water's
work, including advisory committees, campaign committees, etc.
Represent Clean Water externally (e.g., allied organizations, public
officials, and the media)
Coordinate development, communication, and implementation of short and
long-range strategies and plans
Additional duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS. Desirable qualifications include:
Five years or more of progressively responsible work experience as a senior
manager in a non-profit or public institution or organization
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Successful fundraising (e.g., large donor, grants, events)
Experience developing non-staff leadership bodies such as boards of
directors, campaign or coalition steering committees, etc.
Experience with legislative and/or electoral campaigns and with organizing
coalitions and communities
Experience working with grassroots groups and campaigns, including
community canvasses
Proven strategic planning and operational management skills, including the
ability to manage diverse projects and personnel, budgets and multiple
priorities
Experience working with local or state environmental organization
Ability to work with diverse people and organizations
Computer literacy
