Department Approval of Coastal Zone Management Grants

The DEQ is pleased to announce the approval of approximately 56 Coastal
Zone Management (CZM) grants recommended by the Michigan Coastal Management
Program for Fiscal Year 2002/2003. These approved grants will provide over
$1.5 million to coastal communities, state agencies, non-profit
organizations, regional planning agencies, universities, and tribal
governments to fund a variety of shoreline related projects. Examples
include projects that range from site design and engineering, to low cost
construction projects that enhance public access and protect sensitive
coastal resources. Grant projects also include assistance with coastal
land use planning activities, including locally sponsored growth management
initiatives as well as educational, interpretive, and historic preservation
projects. All CZM grants have been forwarded to the U.S. Department of
Commerce, Office of Ocean and Coastal Resource Management, for review and
final approval.

This annual funding is the result of a state and federal partnership
established through the Coastal Zone Management Act (CZMA) of 1972. The
CZMA establishes the only national program to plan comprehensively for, and
manage development of, the nation's coastal land and water resources.
