The newly appointed head of the state Office of the Great Lakes has asked to
step down and remain the head of the Michigan State Fair.

Gov. Jennifer Granholm named John Hertel, 56, of Macomb County's Lenox
Township, as the new director of the Office of the Great Lakes last month.
But a new partnership with Joe Dumars Fieldhouse at the state fairgrounds
has prompted Hertel to ask to remain manager of the Michigan State Fair and
Exposition Center.

Granholm agreed and on Friday named former state Sen. Ken DeBeaussaert to
replace Hertel.

"John Hertel and Ken DeBeaussaert have been strong members of the Granholm
team and were instrumental in helping us hit the ground running on Jan. 1,"
Granholm said in prepared comments.

The Office of the Great Lakes, in the state Department of Environmental
Quality, oversees Great Lakes water quality, negotiates regional policies
with other states and Canada, works on implementing Annex 2001 to protect
Michigan waters from diversion and seeks stronger laws to protect the Great
Lakes against the introduction of nuisance species.

DeBeaussaert, 48, is vice president of legislative relations for the
Michigan Economic Development Corp. He was a state senator from 1995 to
2002, but was prevented from seeking re-election last year by term limits.

Born in Mount Clemens and living in Macomb County's Chesterfield Township,
DeBeaussaert was a state legislator in the House and Senate for 18 years,
Granholm noted. He served on committees responsible for environmental and
marine issues, and was a member of the Senate task force which recommended
steps to protect Great Lakes water quality and groundwater tables.

He was a member of the Great Lakes Commission, a multistate organization,
and later of the Blue Ribbon Commission on Lake St. Clair.
