The linked article from yesterday's Detroit
Free Press highlights an effort by State Rep. Paul Condino to end the absurd
loophole in Michigan's wetlands laws that exposes non-contigous wetlands under 5
acres in size to destruction without public oversight or a DEQ
permit.
The bill, unfortunately, applies only to
those on publicly-owned land, but that doesn't stop Diane Katz at the hard-right
Mackinac Center from attacking it, using the usual extremist mantra that the
bill is not based on sound science. But how sound is her science when she says,
"The definition of wetlands has been stretched to encompass any plot of land
that gets wet sometimes."
Go to wetland ecology school,
Diane.
