FIRST FRIDAY LUNCHEON
SPEAKER: Karel Rogers, Ph.D., Professor, Department of Biology, Grand
Valley State University
TOPIC: "Climate Change: the Science." Highlights of the report
"Confronting Climate Change in the Great Lakes Region: Impacts on Our
Communities and Ecosystems" released this month by The Union of Concerned
Scientists and The Ecological Society of America will be presented along
with a critique of the report. The Great Lakes Region is home to 60 million
people whose economic activities totalled nearly $2 trillion (US) in the
year 2000, a sum greater than the gross domestic production of any nation
except the US and Japan. This region is a major contibutor to the greenhouse
gases that are changing the earth's climate drastically. It is predicted
with high scientific confidence that Michigan will have a climate like
present-day Kentucky within 30 years. Although the federal government has
not taken a lead in mitigating projected climate impacts, regional cities
have made progress in carbon emissions. Implications for denial of the
problem and opportunities for addressing the problem will be discussed.
