E-M:/ Importing disease into Genesee County

Enviro-Mich message from "Sherry Hayden" <hayden@tir.com>

Emerald Ash Borer Hearing Tomorrow at 9 a.m.!

Tomorrow, Tuesday May 20, an informal meeting will be held regarding imports
of yet another kind of trash into Genesee County. Six counties southeast of
us have lost thousands of Ash trees to Emerald Ash Borer infestations. To
prevent the spread of the disease, these counties are supposed to be
quarantined. Yet the State of Michigan plans to chip up the affected trees
and ship these infected chips to non-infected Genesee County to burn in the
Genesee Township incinerator.

Last December we learned of the plan, and also learned there was to be no
public hearing. Mike Keeler complained to every official in the county.
Richard Hammel, County Commissioner Chair, arranged for an informational
meeting and slide show to update the public. There will be a
question-and-answer session after the presentation.

The Genesee County Administration Building is at 816 Beach St. in Flint
right across the street from City Hall on S. Saginaw St. The meeting will
be held in the Harris Auditorium at 9 a.m.

Neighbors and concerned citizens are encouraged to attend.
