Jim Sygo Selected as Second DEQ Deputy Director
DEQ Director Steve Chester today announced that Mr. Jim Sygo has been
selected as the second Deputy Director for the Department of Environmental
Quality effective Sunday May 25, 2003.
Jim has been the Chief of the Remediation and Redevelopment Division since
September 15, 2002. As Division Chief he administered the statewide
programs that provide for cleanup of the environment and encourage
redevelopment of formerly contaminated sites. Prior to that, he served for
ten years as the Chief of the Waste Management Division where he
administered the statewide programs on the management of hazardous waste,
solid waste, liquid industrial waste, pollution incident plans, and
groundwater discharges.
"While the number of qualified and talented DEQ staff who interviewed for
this position made this a difficult choice, I believe that the DEQ as a
whole will definitely benefit from Jim's expertise and experience," said
Steve Chester, Director of DEQ. "I know I speak not only for myself but
for the entire Executive Division when I say that this is a welcomed
addition to the management team. I am looking forward to working with Jim
in his new capacity as we move forward on the many important issues facing
the new DEQ."
Jim Sygo has been with the DEQ since becoming a water quality specialist in
the Saginaw District in 1983. He was named Saginaw District Supervisor of
Waste Management Division in 1987, Region II Waste Management Supervisor in
Roscommon in 1989, and Region III Waste Management Supervisor for the
southern half of the Lower Peninsula in 1990. Jim has a bachelor's degree
from the University of Michigan in meteorology and oceanography and a
master's degree in oceanography also from U of M. Prior to joining the
DEQ, he worked for the Department of State Police as a health physicist,
and for Spicer Engineering in Saginaw, and Black and Veatch in Detroit as a
consultant.
