E-M:/ Petition to oppose Sugar Island Bridge

PETITION IN OPPOSITION TO THE PROPOSED SUGAR ISLAND BRIDGE

We, the undersigned,  oppose the construction of a bridge from Meso (Upper Hickory) Island to Sugar Island.  We object for the following reasons:  a) it will severely disrupt and restrict the navigational use of the Sugar Island channel; and as a result, b) it will increase the risk of accidents by constricting the heavily used channel, by forcing larger vessels into the commercial navigation channels and/or into unsafe water east and south of the island; and c) the bridge and its construction will destroy the great diversity found in the natural ecosystem present in the shallow waters on both sides of the channel plus altering the normal hydrology of the area including the flow into Gibraltar Bay.
