Dr. Craig Harris "Sustainable Fisheries"

Wednesday, October 1, 2003, 4:00 p.m.
223 Natural Resources Building

"After almost 100 years of efforts to manage fisheries for sustainability, most of the major stocks of fish for human consumption continue to decline, and questions are raised about the sustainability of fish farming. In his presentation, Craig will examine some of the ongoing efforts to enhance the sustainability of the world's fisheries."

Dr. Craig Harris is a member of the Department of Sociology here at MSU. He has done research on fisheries in the North American Great Lakes, of Lake Victoria and the East African Great Lakes, off the coast of Senegal and Taiwan, and in Asian aquaculture.
Dr. Jim Bingen "Learning and Sustainability"

Wednesday, October 8, 2003, 4:00 p.m.
223 Natural Resources Building

"From Mali to Rwanda and back to Michigan, Jim has been involved for several years with small scale farmers as they find ways "to think publicly as citizens." With literacy skills and the capacity for public thinking, social and political learning becomes a foundation for sustainability and democratic development."

Dr. Jim Bingen is a professor in the Resource Development department at MSU. Building on his career work with farmer empowerment issues in French-speaking Africa, he is also involved with several efforts in Michigan to promote the development of more local food and farming systems. Jim's presentation uses illustrations from his work in sub-Saharan Africa and Michigan.
