A remarkable entrepreneur, Judy Wicks, is coming to Lansing, with side trips to Grand Rapids and Ann Arbor in mid-October. Judy is the founder and owner of the White Dog Café www.whitedog.com and founder of Business Alliance for Local Living Economies (BALLE) www.balle.org . Judy Wicks is founder and CEO of Philadelphia's 20year old White Dog Café, a 100 employee restaurant with $5 million in revenues. She is co-founder and co-chair of both the national Business Alliance for Local Living Economies, and the local Sustainable Business Network of Greater Philadelphia. The Café sources all produce in season from local organic family farms, and all meat and poultry is humanely raised. Employees make a minimum "living wage," keeps 5:1 ratio between lowest and highest paid employee, which includes herself and the chef, and 100% of electricity is generated by wind power. 10 - 20% of profits are contributed to the White Dog Cafe Foundation, dedicated to building local living economies by making small grants and running programs to support local family farmers and independent community-based businesses. Judy has won numerous awards, most recently the Living Economy Award from Business Ethics Magazine. 

Judy's talk "Building Local Living Economies: A Sustainable Alternative to Corporate Globalization" at Wednesday, October 15, 4:00p.m. in the East Lansing Hannah Community Center is being sponsored by the MSU Office of Campus Sustainability, the Central Michigan Sustainable Business Forum, MSU Center for Urban Affairs, C.S. Mott Chair in Sustainable Agriculture,  the Mid-Michigan Environmental Action Council and the School of Hospitality Business at MSU. This event is free and open to the public.
