Rouge Education Project (REP) Assistant Description


General Summary


Under the general direction of the Friends of the Rouge Managing Director and the direct supervision of the Rouge Education Project Coordinator, the Rouge Education Project Assistant will be responsible for assisting with the planning and implementation of the Rouge Education Project (REP).  The REP is a nationally recognized, school-based water quality monitoring program that involves more than 90 K-12 schools throughout the Rouge River watershed annually.  The Rouge River watershed is located in southeastern Michigan.


Job Functions and Responsibilities


Essential Job Functions

Provide assistance in the daily administrative and programmatic tasks of the Rouge Education Project, including but not limited to:


1.       Track and place orders for water quality monitoring equipment and supplies

2.       Enter and track project and water quality data

3.       Assist with record keeping

4.       Follow-up with schools and teachers about their participation, volunteer hours, monitoring data, and payment

5.       Invoice participating schools for project expenses

6.       Assist with preparations for and attend REP workshops.  Facilitate some workshops

7.       Help to ensure that teachers receive the information, equipment and other resources necessary to implement the REP

8.       Communicate with program participants and partners via phone, mail, fax and e-mail

9.       Assist in efforts to recruit and retain schools, corporate sponsors, partners, and volunteers, which may include some public speaking

10.   Update and maintain the REP e-mail group

11.   Inventory monitoring equipment and supplies and re-stock as needed

12.   Assist with mailings

13.   Run project-related errands

14.   Attend Education Task Force Meetings and complete meeting minutes

15.   Organize and maintain REP storage areas


Secondary Job Functions

Provide the following support to Friends of the Rouge:


1.       Assist and support the Friends of the Rouge team and volunteers in Friends of the Rouge activities and programs

2.       Staff Friends of the Rouge displays at conferences, festivals and other events

3.       Assist in fundraising efforts

4.       Track and report activities and time on a daily/weekly/monthly basis

5.       Assist with the physical maintenance of the Friends of the Rouge office, including cleaning and recycling




Skills, Abilities


         Must be a self-starter and possess the ability to follow direction

         Must be detail-oriented

         Must be capable of cheerfully overcoming challenges

         Must possess the ability to meet deadlines

         Must have demonstrated organizational skills

         Must possess professionally sound communication skills, both written and verbal

         Must possess a strong interest in the environment

         Must have knowledge of and skills with Microsoft Office products and the Internet

         Must be familiar with standard office equipment such as copier and fax machine

         Must be able to work effectively in a team environment




Physical Demands


          Must have the ability to occasionally lift 10-40 pounds

          Must be able to walk, bend, squat, reach, sit and other such activities

          Must be able to occasionally work outside in all seasons




Must have reliable means of transportation


Hours, Salary & Benefits

         40+ hours per week. Some hours will be evenings and weekends

         Work schedule is somewhat flexible

         Salary $24,000 per year

         $2,000 annually toward health insurance or 403b retirement plan

         10 combined vacation/sick days per year starting
