Efficiency, a perfectly good idea in the factory, is now a dominant 
social principle.  But it is ill-suited to the contemporary global 
ecological predicament.  Other principles are needed.  Sufficiency is one.

Thomas Princen is Associate Professor in the School of Natural 
Resources and Environment at the University of Michigan, where he also 
co-directs the Workshop on Consumption and Environment.  He was a Pew Faculty Fellow for International Affairs where he received intensive training in methods of active learning. A grant from the MacArthur Foundation for research on consumption and the environment has led to two books, Confronting Consumption and, in progress, The Logic of Sufficiency: Management and Self-Management in an Ecologically Constrained World.
