E-M:/ Pictured Rocks General Management Plan comments

Enviro-Mich message from John Rebers <jrebers@nmu.edu>

Comments on the Pictured Rocks General Management Plan (GMP) are due
October 31. f you would like to send a letter or comments, you can send
them by email to piro_gmp@nps.gov

Information about the GMP revision is available at

Some important issues to consider:

1) Wilderness designation. The Park Service includes some wilderness in
their preferred alternative (Alternative D). More wilderness is proposed
under Alternative E. There has been outspoken opposition to wilderness at
hearings in Munising, so don't assume that wilderness designation will
remain because it is the "preferred" alternative. If you would like to see
wilderness designation, let the Park Service know that you favor
wilderness, and tell them why. Personal perspectives on how your past
visits have been affected by the peace and solitude in the park, and how
these aspects could be affected by wilderness designation, would be
especially helpful.

2) Future of trails in the Chapel Lake/Chapel Beach area. Alternative C
proposes that many of these trails be converted to roads, and that the
Chapel Backcountry campground be eliminated. Please comment on how you feel
about this alternative, particularly if you have hiked on these trails in
the past.

Many of you have commented already - if so thanks!
If you haven't sent in comments, please email the Park Service at the
address above no later than this Friday.

Thanks for your help!
