Great Lakes is cooperating in probe of flame retardants
By Diana Penner

An Indiana company is talking with the Environmental Protection Agency
about ceasing production of flame-retardant chemicals that some research
has shown might be toxic.

The company, Great Lakes Chemical Corp., has its worldwide headquarters
in Indianapolis and a regional headquarters in West Lafayette. It has a
manufacturing facility in Ashley, Ind., but none of the chemicals at
issue are made in Indiana.

In July, the company began talking with the EPA about an alternative
product to one of three kinds of chemicals with flame- retardant
properties, said company spokeswoman Wendy Chance.
