E-M:/ Stench and overflow underway in Lenawee/Hillsdale County

Enviro-Mich message from "Anne M. Woiwode" <anne.woiwode@sierraclub.org>

As the glorious fall sunshine has been full force here in Lansing, we
hear that the stench in Lenawee County is once again so thick you can
spread it on your toast. The dairy CAFOs appear to be spreading full
force all over, and residents, including some with already compromised
respiratory systems, are suffering severe headaches, sore throats and
gagging from the stench on their own property. One of those sent to
doctor yesterday by these symptoms was told the tests for lung capacity
showed further diminishment and damage.

In addition, there is a report of a waste lagoon at one facility
overflowing, a pond downstream from another facility now full of green
slime, and thick spreading of wastes on fields within 24 hours of a
predicted significant rainfall.

Our understanding is that DEQ staff of various disciplines are on hand
doing what they can to document and try to stop the violations -- THANK
YOU. There is no questions that the DEQ has invested tens of thousands
and most likely more than a hundred thousand dollars in this area just
since the beginning of this year chasing after the same problems. This
is the same industry that claims that since they are supposed to be zero
discharge they shouldn't pay more than a pittance for the permits they
are finally required to have. EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THESE PROBLEMS should
be prevented and the perpetrators of this blight should be held entirely
