E-M:/ Sustainability Speaker Series begins next week

Enviro-Mich message from "Link, Terry" <link@mail.lib.msu.edu>

"Sustainability: Making the Connections" is the theme of this semester's MSU Sustainability Speaker Series. All talks are open to the public and free and are held on Monday afternoons at 4:00p.m. in 304 Bessey Hall on the MSU campus. See: http://www.ecofoot.msu.edu/speakers_04.htm for a full lineup of speakers

Monday February 2, our first speaker is Dr. Julie Winkler of MSU's Geography department, speaking on:

"Uncertainty Estimates for Regional Climate Change Scenarios"

BIO: Julie Winker is a Professor of Geography at Michigan State University. Her primary research focus is synoptic climatology, which relates atmospheric circulation to local/regional climate. She is also involved in research on the potential impacts of climate change, specifically in the development of climate scenarios at fine spatial and temporal scales.
An emerging focus in global change studies is the evaluation and communication of uncertainty. However, techniques for estimating the uncertainty surrounding climate change scenarios have only recently been actively pursued. A strategy is provided that makes use of a large suite of regional climate scenarios to 1) determine "quantifiable ranges of uncertainty" for the projected changes in the mean and variability of annual and seasonal temperature in the Great Lakes region and 2) estimate the underlying probability density functions for the temperature projections. In addition, analysis of variance (ANOVA) techniques are used to evaluate the relative magnitude and statistical significance of different sources of uncertainty.
