Sustainability: Implementing the Integration of Social and Living Systems
Sharon Goble, Michigan DEQ

Topic Description:

The need to act sustainably is generally accepted. However, how to implement sustainability is neither agreed upon, nor well understood. Fortunately, we can avoid reinventing the wheel by understanding and emulating nature's living systems, because even the social dimension of our human organizations has a pattern similar to ecological systems. This discussion will focus on understanding human organizations as living systems, providing a framework for practicing sustainability, as well as a number of considerations to manage change in organizations, and examples of sustainable practices.

Sharon Goble manages the Small Business Pollution Prevention Loan Program, administered through the Environmental Science and Services Division of the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ). In 2003 she was asked to prepare a white paper on sustainability upon which her presentation today is based.

Sharon was hired to manage the Small Business Pollution Prevention Loan program over three years ago, but also has 13 years of Michigan DEQ experience in the water and hazardous waste enforcement programs, as well as with the Office of the Great Lakes. Prior to the DEQ, Sharon spent 3 years as a commercial credit analyst for a large regional bank, and 2 years with the Legislative Service Bureau in their Science and Technology Division. Sharon has a Bachelor of Science Degree in Wildlife Biology, a Masters in Business Administration in Finance, and extensive graduate coursework in Environmental Toxicology from Michigan State University.
