News Release

Call for Nominations for First Sand Dune Defenders Hall of Fame

The Lake Michigan Federation, a regional environmental organization that works to protect Lake Michigan and its surrounding areas, is calling for nominations for the first ever Sand Dune Defenders Hall of Fame. Induction in the Sand Dune Defenders Hall of Fame is a high honor that recognizes persons that have made a significant and enduring contribution to protection of the Lake Michigan coastal dune system. The new Sand Dune Defenders Hall of Fame will honor former or current activists, volunteers, government employees, elected officials, authors, artists, and community leaders.
According to the Federation's Michigan Director, Tanya Cabala, "Sand dunes are one of the region's most appealing and fascinating natural wonders. Formed over thousands of years, the dunes are an important part of our history and community life. We are glad to begin this new effort to honor those who have contributed to their protection."
Nominations will be judged by an independent selection committee recruited each year, composed of citizens with expertise in sand dune ecology, history, or activism. Members of the selection committee for this year include: Tom Anderson, Executive Director of the Save the Dunes Council, Glen Chown, Executive Director of the Grand Traverse Regional Land Conservancy, Charles Davis, President of Preserve the Dunes, Dave Dempsey, author and Policy Advisor for the Michigan Environmental Council, Christie Fox, Michigan Coastal Management Program Project Manager, Michigan Department of Environmental Quality, Julie Stoneman, Executive Director of the Land Conservancy of West Michigan, and Elizabeth Tillman-Brockwell, Visitor Center Director for P. J. Hoffmaster State Park, Michigan Department of Natural Resources.
The first inductees for the new Sand Dune Hall of Fame will be announced at the second annual Sand Dune Day, on May 19. For more information about the Hall of Fame, Sand Dune Day, or to obtain a nomination form, contact Sara Urbanski at the Federation by at surbanski@lakemichigan.org <mailto:surbanski@lakemichigan.org> or by calling (616) 850-0745. Forms need to be submitted to the Federation office by April 5.
