E-M:/ Central Wayne trash incinerator closes forever

Enviro-Mich message from Mike Garfield <michaelg@ecocenter.org>

Belated good news:

Last Thursday, the intergovernmental authority which controls the Central
Wayne solid waste incinerator announced that the facility would stop
operations permanently, and eventually be dismantled.

The incinerator has been used for waste disposal by the communities of
Wayne, Westland, Inkster, Garden City, and Dearborn Heights for over 40
years. A major air pollution source, it's got dozens of recent
environmental violations on its record, and has been a flashpoint in
environmentalists' campaigns to phase out incineration across the state.
Believe it or not, the facility is located next door to an elementary school
on Inkster Road.

For over a decade, the "Stop the Burn" campaign to close down the Central
Wayne facility has been organized by the Ecology Center, Sierra Club, Clean
Water Action, and many local activists. The Sierra Club's Ed McArdle led
the campaign from the outset, and Westland activist (and now City
Councilperson) Cheryl Graunstadt was the campaign's leading spokesperson for
the last several years.

The five communities have signed an agreement with Waste Management to
dismantle the incinerator, and to dispose of their waste in the company's
Woodland Meadows landfill, in Van Buren Township. The deal is projected to
save the communities $60 million over 20 years, and confirms what
environmentalists have been saying now for years -- not only is trash
incineration bad for the environment, it's not cost-competitive either. The
deal still needs to be approved by a bankruptcy judge.
