Despite the roar of applause that followed statements by Dow Chemical Co. and community leaders who challenged the state Department of Environmental Quality, agency Director Steve Chester defended state intervention.
Midland is a community at peace with their poison. 70% of questions chosen by Midland Mayor, Drummond Black, were given to Director Chester, who did a great job. Questions on geology, toxicology and the specifics of Dow's license were not permitted to be fully answered by the large contingent of Ph.D's, scientists and staff from MDCH, EPA and MDEQ. Touting banners and lapel pins that said, WE SUPPORT SOUND SCIENCE, the loyal citizens of Midland turned out to defend and support Dow. I did see one lapel pin that said WE SUPPORT DOW SCIENCE...............Indeed, for most residents of Midland that is the only science.
