E-M:/ ALERT: DEQ BUDGET SLASHED BY HOUSE APPROPS SUBCOM

ALERT: DEQ BUDGET SLASHED BY HOUSE APPROPS SUBCOM:

Full Appropriations Committee to meet at NOON TODAY

The House Appropriations Subcommittee on Natural Resources and Environment voted this morning to SLASH the DEQ budget in many ways, including eliminating the Hazardous Waste Division entirely. This is a primarily vindictive, ostrich like response to the DEQ's efforts to try protect the citizens of Michigan who live along the Tittibawassee River from dioxin contamination, by legislators who seem to be more concerned about protecting Dow Chemical than they are about protecting the people of Michigan.

The House Subcommittee on Appropriations voted to:

  • Removed the entire Hazardous Waste Program. Totals about $6 million. They want to send the clean-up program back to the feds.
  • Cut directors salary 15%
  • Cut GF/GP additional 15% across the board
  • Implemented a workforce reduction plan by an additional 8% = 120 positions
