ALERT ALERT ALERT ALERT ALERT ALERT
ACT TODAY PLEASE!!
Most of you have probably followed the outrageous assault on the DEQ's budget in the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Natural Resources and Environment and the full House Approps. Com. yesterday. In a spiteful and irresponsible move, House members who think the DEQ should not be trying to determine dioxin levels in the Tittibawassee River basin nor taking actions to clean it up, eliminated the Hazard Waste Division’s funding, cut 15% out of Steve Chester’s pay, cut 15% out of the overall General Fund budget for the Department, and also imposed an across the board 8% reduction in the DEQ’s budget.
It is abundantly clear this little tantrum is designed to give a handful of Midland area legislators and Congressman Dave Camp leverage to push the Governor to back off on the DEQ’s efforts to protect public health and do their job in Midland. This group of legislators will have a meeting with the Gov this weekend during the Detroit Chamber of Commerce Mackinac Island retreat.
PLEASE TAKE TIME NOW TO CONTACT GOVERNOR GRANHOLM’S OFFICE AND TELL HER YOU WANT HER TO DEFEND THE DEQ’S ACTIONS AND TO DEMAND FULL FUNDING FOR THE DEQ BE APPROVED BY THE LEGISLATURE. DEQ Director Steve Chester and the DEQ staff ought to be getting Kudos for reversing the Engler Administration’s dismantling of environmental protection in Michigan, and Governor Granholm needs to stand 100% behind Chester’s actions! You can send an email to constituent services through the Governor’s website: http://www.michigan.gov/gov/0,1607,7-168-22678_23862-65331--,00.html
OR CALL OR FAX BELOW:
Governor Jennifer M. Granholm
Ask for a response from the Gov’s office.
Also, PLEASE CONTACT YOUR STATE REPRESENTATIVE AND DEMAND THEY FULLY FUND THE DEQ in voting on the DEQ Budget next week. (To find contact information for your State Representative, please go to http://www.house.mi.gov)
There are lots of folks on Enviro-Mich who know more about this issue – Ask questions if you have them, but PLEASE ACT AS SOON AS POSSIBLE!!
