Tribal Leaders, Public Health Groups, Environmentalists to Gather at Capitol

Call on Granholm Administration to Stop Mercury Pollution in Michigan

WHAT:           With a giant, inflatable fish as a backdrop, public interest advocates will gather in front of the state Capitol to deliver thousands of comments to Governor Granholm to show the broad support for eliminating power plant mercury pollution in Michigan and urge the governor to take immediate action.

WHY:              Eating mercury-contaminated fish is the primary way people are exposed to mercury, a highly toxic chemical that can cause learning disabilities, developmental delays, and problems with fine motor coordination in children.  Michigan has posted health warnings for mercury covering every lake statewide, urging people to avoid or limit consumption of fish due to high levels of mercury.  Earlier this year, EPA’s own scientists estimated that more than 600,000 of the four million babies born each year have unsafe levels of mercury in their blood.
