Harrison Township fails to secure option on 'environmental jewel.'

HARRISON TOWNSHIP — A 500-year-old, 155-acre pristine forest and wetland that was going to be bought by Harrison Township and saved as a nature preserve and hiking-biking path has been sold to a developer.

Harrison Township was going to pay $1 million for the property, which included a $700,000 grant from the state, but Macomb County developer Guy Rizzo offered to buy the property along Metropolitan Parkway for an extra $250,000, said township Supervisor Mark Knowles.

.....But Knowles said that when the township failed to secure an option on the land for a cost of about $20,000, that left the land vulnerable to being sold.
