E-M:/ RE: / Lobby Day in Lansing, Michigan

Enviro-Mich message from "Anne M. Woiwode" <anne.woiwode@sierraclub.org>

Thanks for your question -- more than 50 Sierra Club members and
supporters came to the Capitol for a full day of meetings with
Legislators. This wonderful, diverse group ranged in age from teenagers
to senior citizens, came from all over the lower peninsula, and talked
about three primary issues:

- urging all Legislators to support the sulfide ore mining legislation
that will come out of the successful work group process completed last

- the critical need to address concentrated animal feeding operations
(CAFOS), which attention to asking legislators to oppose the methane
digester subsidy bills which were before the House that day; and

- support for legislation to begin to address the lead poisoning of
children in some parts of Michigan.

Meetings were held with more than half of the Legislators or their
aides, and materials were dropped at virtually all the offices.

Gayle Miller, Sierra Club's Conservation Coordinator, pulled this
together with tremendous help from our Legislative Committee and
volunteers Abby Caldwell and Keith Hanna. Another Lobby Day will be
planned for Sierra Club members during the first months of 2005 when the
new Legislature is in place.
