Re: E-M:/ Funeral Services for Stewart Freeman today

------------------------------------------------------------------------- Enviro-Mich message from Kirk Riley ------------------------------------------------------------------------- The State Journal has a full article today as a tribute to Stew Freeman.  I knew Stew from serving on student-project review panels at MSU with him, and always remember his gentle, humor-filled interrogations of students.  He sought to encourage student idealism while making sure they knew what the law said on a particular issue. He will be missed.

The State Journal writes:

Renowned attorney for state dies
Asst. AG Freeman was key in tobacco settlement
By James McCurtis Jr.
Lansing State Journal

A longtime state attorney who went after fraudulent businesses and led the case that captured Michigan billions of dollars from tobacco companies has died.

Funeral services will be held today for Stewart "Stew" Freeman of Williamston. Freeman served as an assistant attorney general in charge for 38 years up to his death.

More tragic news.

One of the pioneering champions for Michigan?s environment, Stew Freeman, died suddenly at home of a heart attack on Veteran?s Day.  Mr. Freeman worked for the Department of Attorney General for 38 years and spent nearly all of that time helping Frank Kelley, Jennifer Granholm, and Mike Cox champion the causes of consumer protection, protection of the environment, protection of human health, and recovery of the state costs of dealing with the public health epidemic of tobacco use.  He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

His funeral services will be held today at St. Thomas Aquinas parish in East Lansing.  Obituary from LSJ below:
