Toxic mud spurs study of health risk to residents
 
Sediments in the creek -- which flows into Mona Lake and is popular among children who play at Johnny O. Harris Park in Muskegon Heights -- contain the highest levels of cadmium ever reported in the Great Lakes; cadmium alters hormone activity and is a suspected cancer-causing compound.
Cadmium concentrations in that stream bank are 1,000 times higher than what the state considers safe. Rediske said federal officials opted to leave the contaminated creek bank alone to avoid harming the creek; that toxic dirt is now eroding into the creek.
