UPDATE: EPA TOXIC CHEMICAL STUDY ON LOW INCOME CHILDREN
Two weeks ago Organic Bytes blew the whistle on the Environmental
Protection Agency (EPA) for a proposed toxic chemical "monitoring
study" on low-income children. The extreme toxicity of these
chemicals is already known and many of them are already banned in
Europe. Such a large number of people signed the OCA petition
   <http://www.organicconsumers.org/epa-alert.htm> (50,000+) and
   forwarded it to their friends
   <mailto:?subject=EPA%20to%20Test%20Toxic%20Chemicals%20on%20Low%20Income%20Kids&body=Dear%20friend,%0A%0AThe%20Environmental%20Protection%20Agency%20%28EPA%29is%20seeking%20input%20on%20a%20new%20proposed%20study%20in%20which%20infants%20in%20participating%20low%20income%20families%20will%20be%20monitored%20for%20health%20impacts%20as%20they%20undergo%20exposure%20to%20known%20toxic%20chemicals%20over%20the%20course%20of%20two%20years.%20For%20taking%20part%20in%20these%20studies,%20each%20family%20will%20receive%20$970,%20a%20free%20video%20camera,%20a%20T-shirt,%20and%20a%20framed%20certificate%20of%20appreciation.%20The%20study,%20entitled%20Children%27s%20Environmental%20Exposure%20Research%20Study%20%28CHEERS%29,%20will%20look%20at%20how%20chemicals%20are%20ingested,%20inhaled%20or%20absorbed%20by%20children%20ranging%20from%20babies%20to%203%20years%20old.%0A%0APlease%20take%20a%20moment%20to%20follow%20this%20link%20and%20join%20tens%20of%20thousands%20of%20citizens%20in%20p%0Aetitioning%20the%20EPA%20to%20terminate%20this%20study%20prior%20to%20its%20proposed%20launch%20in%20early%202005.%0A%0AMore%20information,%20related%20newspaper%20headlines%20and%20petition%20here:%20%0A%0Ahttp://www.organicconsumers.org/epa-alert.htm%0A%0APlease%20also%20forward%20this%20message.>
in the first 48 hours, that our website server temporarily crashed
and the EPA asked the Organic Consumers Association to stop the
petition. We will not stop until the chemical corporations are
disinvited in having a hand in this biased study, low income
families are no longer targeted, and consumers learn the truth about
these dangerous chemicals. If you haven't already done so, please
   sign the petition here...

ALERT: EPA'S BACKROOM DEAL WITH CHEMICAL COMPANIES TRIPLES RAT POISONING RATE IN KIDS In 2001, the Bush led EPA struck a deal with chemical companies to remove two important rat poison regulations designed to protect the safety of children. Specifically, the safety measures had required rat poisons contain an ingredient that makes the candy-like pellets taste bitter to kids and a dye to make it more obvious to adults when a child has ingested the poison. As a result of no longer requiring those safety additives, the nation is now seeing a record number of children poisoned by the toxic pellets. This year more than 50,000 children were poisoned by rodenticides, which is three times as many as were affected prior to the removal of safety regulations. According to a recent article in the Los Angeles Times, the EPA met five times behind closed doors with representatives of the chemical industry, which ultimately resulted in the removal of the safety regulations. QUOTES OF THE WEEK
"EPA's acquiescence to the demands of the rat poison industry is a
disturbing example of the Bush administration EPA allowing industry
   literally to rewrite the rules."--
Aaron Colangelo (Attorney who uncovered EPA documents of private
   industry meetings)

"To bow to business pressure and take the child-proofing out of rat
poison seems the stuff of parody, something you might read in the
Onion. But this is no joke."--
   Minneapolis Star and Tribune 11/22/2004
