The Nature Conservancy purchased roughly 6,300 acres north
and east of Bete Grise (the "tip" of the Keweenaw) two years ago and
subsequently transferred to DNR. The land was purchase from Lake Superior
Land Company a subsidiary of International Paper. This area may have back in
the 1970s been owned by Universal Oil but it has passed through several
corporate owners since. Roughly 60%+ of the land in Keweenaw County (150,000
acres) is still owned by Lake Superior Land Company. I'm happy to provide a
description that describes our acquisition at the tip upon your request, or
you can call
Jeff Knoop, our director of land protection in the UP at 906-225-0399.

Whatever happened to and who owns the lands at the very tip of the Keeweenau
to the northeast and east of Bete Grise Bay?.....the lands that used to be
owned by Universal Oil Products?
