Just how deadly is dioxin? As the Granholm administration negotiates a possible settlement agreement with Midland's Dow that could determine the how much dioxin is removed from the Tittabaswasee and Saginaw River basins and who pays, the lead story in the nation's newspapers today is that this life-threatening toxin is the poison of choice in the Ukraine where opposition candidate Viktor Yushchenko was targeted for assassination.

From today's New York Times:
Tests done at a hospital in Vienna confirmed that Viktor A. Yushchenko, the Ukrainian opposition candidate, had been poisoned with dioxin, doctors there said Saturday, providing an explanation for a broad array of painful and disfiguring conditions that plagued him during the last three months of the presidential campaign.
Trace amounts of dioxin, a highly toxic waste product of various industrial chemical processes, are a common contaminant in soil and foods and are a concern because long-term exposure to even tiny amounts can cause cancer. It remains in the body for years after exposure...
