E-M:/ Manure-y Christmas!

One week before Christmas day, the residents of Lenawee County again were
hit over the head with the fact that they are second class citizens when it
comes the enjoyment of their own homes and community during the holiday
season. Environmentally Concerned Citizens of South Central Michigan
(ECCSCM) posted a new stench alert at http://www.nocafos.org/stench.htm :

"Dec. 17, 18 - stench from Hartland Farms draglining along Hughes Hwy.
Unincorporated, 1 week before Christmas.  Drivers along Beecher Rd report
horrendous stench 2-3 miles away, also along Cadmus Rd. Air quality
complaint called in to DEQ. Lime Lake residents also report stench from
Vreba-Hoff manure applications."

In addition, there are reports and DEQ is investigating potentially illegal
discharges of contaminated waste water into a county drain from the Hartland
Farms facility, where the CAFO operators were draglining (spreading wastes)
through Friday night into Saturday early morning. Water that appeared to be
contaminated was running out of the Henning Drain, a county drain that is
entirely underground and runs through the Hartland Farms fields. A DEQ
official spent much of Saturday investigating the mess. This morning, with
temperatures at 4 degrees actual temperature, this drain was running, while
virtually every other waterway in the area was frozen solid. Water samples
from the site were also gathered by volunteers to test for contaminants.

So, while many people in Michigan are enjoying the beautiful snow and bright
sunshine of this cold day in December, once again the folks who have found
themselves surrounded by an industry that seems to be able to pollute with
impugnity must gag as they go about their business, must worry if the
contamination is in fact seeping into their home drinking water wells, must
wonder why they have been singled out to suffer this kind of ignominy on an
on-going basis over the past 4-6 years. Manure-y Christmas indeed.
