E-M:/ MSU hosts Semester long speaker series

Enviro-Mich message from "Link, Terry" <link@mail.lib.msu.edu>

Michigan State University through its Office of Campus Sustainability and a multitude of other offices, departments, and colleges is hosting a major speaker series to recognize the beginning of the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development, 2005-2014. This decade of focus on the role of education to ensure sustainable development is an outcome of the lack of significant progress towards sustainability between the 1992 Rio Summit and the 2002 Johannesburg conference.

To help raise the consciousness of the university and larger community towards both the need and possible remedies, a noted set of speakers will address this crucial topic over the next few months.
The first talk of the semester will feature Dr. Anthony Cortese addressing: "Is Higher Education Moving Fast Enough to Create a Healthy, Just and Sustainable World?" Wednesday, January 19 at 7:30pm, Room B104 Wells Hall, on the MSU Campus

Dr. Cortese ScD is President of Second Nature, a co-founder of the Education for Sustainability Western Network. Dr. Cortese was formerly the Commissioner of the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection and Dean of environmental programs at Tufts University. He spear-headed the Talloires Declaration of University Leaders for a Sustainable Future in 1990. Dr.Cortese is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and a founding member and currently Chair of The Natural Step US.

Other speakers in the series include:

February 14	Dr. Peter Blaze Corcoran
March 14	Terry Tempest Williams
March 21 Tom Atlee
April 4 Sara Parkin
April 7 Vandana Shiva
