Re: E-M:/ GVSU pumps up waterway research

The City of Muskegon is also very proud of its GVSU facilities located on the Muskegon Lake shoreline downtown Muskegon.  In addition to the Annis Water Resources Institute, GVSU has recently opened its Michigan Alternative and Renewable Energy Center (MAREC), the first commercial project in the world to integrate fuel-cell technology, a heat recovery system for heating and air conditioning, solar photovoltaics, and a nickel-hydride battery storage system.  It is one the first facilities in Michigan to attain the Gold Leadership in Energy & Environmental Designs (LEED) rating for green buildings.  MAREC was constructed in Muskegon's Smart Zone, formerly the location of the massive Teledyne Continentals Motors plant.  Both the Annis Institute and the MAREC were constructed on Brownfield sites, using several of Michigan's Brownfield Redevelopment tools to facilitate their development.

When the institute's $5.5 million Lake Michigan Center opened in 2001, GVSU officials said the facility would become the nation's premier Great Lakes research institution, the "Woods Hole of West Michigan." That's a reference to the famed Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in Massachusetts.

That hasn't happened, nor will it, according to Alan Steinman, director of GVSU's Water Resources Institute. But Steinman said the institute will continue its education and outreach programs while conducting more research on the coastal areas of West Michigan, where the land meets water.
