Outreach Associate


The Lake Michigan Federation is seeking a three-quarters time Outreach Associate to support the work of the oldest Great Lakes citizens' organization in North America as a voice for clean water, land and water conservation, and fish and wildlife habitat restoration, and education and outreach.


The overall purpose of this position is to help research policy issues and conduct outreach efforts for the Federation in Wisconsin, specifically:

* Build coalitions and conduct outreach (such as workshops, electronic communications) with diverse stakeholder organizations to push for water conservation policy reform under the "Great Lakes Basin Water Resources Compact" (see http://www.lakemichigan.org/conservation/withdrawal_intro.asp for more information).

* Engage volunteers in the Federation's Adopt-a-Beach program to build an ethic of care for Southeast Wisconsin's coast (www.lakemichigan.org/adopt/default.asp).


* Excellent communication skills, including the public speaking, compelling writing style, and superb listening abilities.

* Ability to mobilize constituencies with different interests that may be supporting policy reform for different reasons. 

* Hard-working and flexible; willing to do what is needed to meet deadlines and achieve objectives.

* Sound judgment and good habits of consulting with supervisor and others.

* Good understanding of environmental issues and politics.

* Bachelor's degree and three year's professional experience preferred.

* Enthusiasm for working independently, within a team context of staff in different locations.

* Attraction to mission-driven public interest work, which often has resource limitations.

Job Parameters

* This is a three-quarters time, one-year contractual position with the possibility of extension to full-time, permanent status.

* Position location: Milwaukee metropolitan area requiring work out of home or offsite using own computer. Some travel required for job; therefore, ability to drive (driver's license and good driving record required). Salary commensurate with experience.

* This position will serve primarily under program managers located in Chicago and Michigan, dependent on work assignments, with secondary management by the Executive Director, located in Chicago.
