E-M:/ Poop on snow and foul air reports

Enviro-Mich message from "Anne Woiwode" <anne.woiwode@sierraclub.org>

Folks who have followed the CAFO issue in Michigan will recognize the
"seasons of stench" and snow melt/waste run off as being fairly predictable
each year. The mid-winter dumping of animal wastes onto snow covered fields
is underway, teeing up the almost inevitable runoff into the waterways of
the state based on simply physics (change of state from solid to liquid and
response to gravity, and also out-gassing and stirring up particulate matter
which enter the air).

Once again, the Environmentally Concerned Citizens of South Central Michigan
(ECCSCM) are documenting what is happening in their area. Go to:
http://www.nocafos.org/ to see both the methods used for dumping animal
wastes on the snow, and to read the most recent "stench alert". As always,
it is important to realize that the pollution documented by ECCSCM is being
brought to your attention because of the extraordinary diligence of the
local activists in that area, not because it isn't happening elsewhere.

E-M readers will have noticed a mention of the exceptionally high levels of
air pollutants in the Midwest at this time of year from a variety of
sources. This air pollution from CAFOs is a contributor in a variety of
ways, but the worst effect is in the immediate vicinity. No tall stacks for
these folks.
