Job Title: Contract Wetland Identification Specialist.

Job Profile: The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality's (MDEQ's) Land and Water Management Division (LWMD) is looking for qualified persons to fill up to five seasonal positions. These positions are being offered to fulfill the MDEQ's obligations to conduct wetland assessments pursuant to Part 303, Wetlands Protection, of the Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Act, 1994 PA 451, as amended.

Location: One or more of the MDEQ field offices located throughout the state. Successful candidates will work within one or more of the following regions of Michigan: Southwest Michigan (Kalamazoo District Office), South-Central Michigan (Lansing/Bay City District Office), or Southeast Michigan (Warren District Office).

Educational Requirements: Active enrollment in or completion of a BS or MS degree program in Natural Resource Sciences.

Desirable Qualifications: Training, education, and field experience in identifying Michigan wetland plant species, soils, determining surficial and near-surface hydrology, and map interpretation skills. Candidates must have excellent organization, communication, and writing skills. Candidates must be familiar with Microsoft Word and database entry.

Description: Selected candidates will attend a one-week intensive training course outlining wetland regulation and identification procedures in Michigan. Candidates will be responsible for determining the presence and location of wetlands and either flagging or verifying wetland consultant flagged boundaries of Michigan's wetlands. Travel and use of personal vehicle may be required to travel within the assigned region(s) of the state.

Compensation: These are contract positions with wages ranging from $14 to $16 per hour, commensurate with experience and qualifications. In addition, personal vehicle mileage and reimbursement of meals will be included per State of Michigan guidelines. Please note that positions are seasonal and offer no minimum guaranteed hours of work; however, based upon previous seasons and anticipated workload, hours generally range from 30 to 40 per week.

Additional: The position offers an excellent opportunity to enhance wetland delineation skills and work directly with wetland scientists in the public and private sectors. Many previous candidates who held these positions have either returned for additional seasons or have found permanent employment in state government and other environmental organizations. These positions are contractual allowing for a maximum of 832 hours of service per calendar year.
