E-M:/ Bush so-called "Clear Skies" Bill May Be Dead

Enviro-Mich message from "Alex J. Sagady & Associates" <ajs@sagady.com>

My word from DC clear air folks is that
the George Bush so-called "clear skies" bill to
weaken the Federal Clean Air Act.....may be dead in
Committee on a 9 to 9 deadlock.

For this result, environmentalists can thank....

.....1 Republican....Sen. Lincoln Chaffee of Rhode Island
..... 1 Independent.....Sen. James Jeffords of Vermont
.....1 conservative Democrat... Sen. Max Baucus of Montana
.and...1 rising star Democrat....Sen. Barack Obama of Illinois
[Obama had been targetted on the issue by the Teamsters, but
he held firm to protect the Clean Air Act]

The Bush bill would have long delayed power plant cleanup, undermined
toxic air pollution controls and would have severely weakened current
clean air law. Sen. James Inhofe (R-Oklahoma) had tried to ram
it through from the Bush administration....this is the same US Senator
who recently tried to initimidate the organization of state clean air
officials called the State and Territorial Air Pollution Program Administrators
and whose aide tried inserted legislation in a budget bill allowing
senate and house committee members access to American's IRS
tax returns.
