Michigan State University is pleased to host our final two lectures of the semester for the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development Speaker Series on Monday, April 4, 7:30pm - Rm B104 Wells Hall

Sara Parkin,  "Helped Wanted: Sustainable Capitalism and Higher Education Leadership"


Sara Parkin is a founding Programme Director of Forum for the Future and has been an independent campaigner, writer and broadcaster on environmental and sustainable development issues for over 30 years. She chairs the Real World Coalition, sits on the
Board of the Environment Agency and is a member of the Scientific Advisory Committee for the Research Council's Sustainable Energy Programme. She also sits on the board of the new Leadership Foundation and NERC, in recognition of her work with the engineering
profession she has been made a companion of both the Institution of Civil Engineers and the Institute of Energy.
Sara hails from Scotland, and now lives and works in Hackney. After an early career in nursing and nursing research in Edinburgh and Leeds, Sara Parkin spent most of the 1970s and 1980s in active involvement with green politics. She led the UK Green Party to its famous 15 per cent vote in the 1989 European elections and played a pivotal role in the growth and co-ordination of the European Green parties. She stepped back from green party politics in 1992 to add to her advocacy role active engagement in change.
She was awarded an OBE (order of the British Empire) in 2001 for services to education and sustainable development and received an honorary Doctorate of Science from the University of Brighton in February 2005.
