Sierra Club Statement: Senators Introduce Resolution to Protect Communities
from Mercury Pollution
Nat Mund, Sierra Club Senior Washington Representative
Washington, D.C. -- Today, Senators Patrick Leahy (D-VT), Susan Collins
(R-ME), and Jim Jeffords (I-VT) introduced a Congressional Review Act
resolution that disapproves the portion of the Bush administration mercury
rule that allows power plants to not be treated as a source of toxic
pollution. This resolution to disapprove the mercury delisting rule is
being mirrored in the House, led by Representatives Tom Allen (D-ME), Marty
Meehan (D-MA), and Henry Waxman (D-CA).
Senior Washington Representative Nat Mund issued the following statement:
"We applaud Senators Leahy, Collins, and Jeffords for stepping up to
protect communities across the country from the dangers of mercury
pollution. Senator Leahy is joined by a bipartisan group of 29 Senators
who hope to block the Environmental Protection Agency's pursuit to stop
treating power plants as a source of toxic air pollution. The Clean Air
Act, if properly enforced, will make significant strides in reducing
mercury and other toxic air pollution."
