E-M:/ Great Lakes meetings this week

Enviro-Mich message from "Chris Grubb" <Grubbc@nwf.org>

Summer 2005 is an historic time for Michigan residents to stand up for
the Great Lakes. There are three meetings across the state this week
that will be a chance to discuss current Great Lakes issues and will
outline the process for making your voice heard by decision makers.

Tonight, 7pm - Oakland Community College, Oakland Ridge Campus
27055 Orchard Lake Road
Farmington Hills, MI (directions at www.oaklandcc.edu)
B building, Room 206

Wednesday, 7pm - Wealthy Theatre
Wealthy St. SE
Grand Rapids, MI

Thursday, 7pm - North Central Michigan College
1515 Howard St.
Petoskey, MI
Library Conference Center

These meetings are being hosted by the National Wildlife Federation,
Alliance for the Great Lakes and Tip of the Mitt Watershed Council.
Staff from other organizations such as the Sierra Club, Michigan
Environmental Council, Clean Water Action, and PIRGIM will also be on

The two major initiatives that are currently open for public comment
and hearings are:
1) The Great Lakes Governors have released a second draft of the Great
Lakes Basin Water Resources Compact for public comment and hearings, an
inter-state compact that would better protect Great Lakes water supply
from overuse and diversion. see www.greatlakesforever.org for more

2) The first draft of a federal plan to protect and restore the Great
Lakes was released on July 7th, followed by public hearings and a 60-day
comment period. While the plan is a first step, it must be funded by the
state and federal government to make a difference for the lakes. see
www.restorethelakes.org for more info.

NWF's mission is to inspire Americans to protect wildlife for our
children's future.
