Public Meeting Planned in Marquette

on Kennecott Eagle Project

The Department of Environmental Quality will hold a public meeting in Marquette on Thursday, August 4, to discuss tentative plans for a potential new underground mine in Marquette County.  This informational meeting will be held from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the University Center Building on the campus of Northern Michigan University

The public meeting will provide interested citizens with an opportunity to learn about Kennecott’s tentative plans for a nickel-copper mine at the Eagle Project site located about 30 miles northwest of Marquette, and how a new mine proposal would be evaluated under environmental laws.  Citizens will have an opportunity to voice any concerns and recommendations they may have.  Representatives of the DEQ, the Department of Natural Resources, and Kennecott will be present to provide information and answer questions.

The DEQ is sponsoring this meeting to promote open and frank communication with citizens and interest groups.  For additional information on the public meeting, please contact Joe Maki of the DEQ, at (906) 346-8563.

Editor’s note:  DEQ news releases are available on the department’s Internet home page at www.michigan.gov/deq.
