Hartwick Pines State Park Hosts Forest Fest

The Michigan Forest Visitor Center and Hartwick Pines Logging Museum today announced the 8th annual Forest Fest, Aug. 12-13, at Hartwick Pines State Park, northeast of Grayling.

The musical group The Renaissance Foresters kicks off the 2005 Forest Fest with a delightful selection of traditional ballads and new songs about forests, logging and the out-of-doors at the logging museum amphitheater Friday evening, Aug. 12, at 7:30 p.m.

On Saturday, Forest Fest offers a full day of fun activities from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., including guided walks and demonstrations by professional foresters, presentations on current insect problems Michigan trees are facing, information about preventing and suppressing wildfires, children's activities and games, a visit by Smokey Bear, displays on forest products and forest management and health exhibits by various wildlife organizations, plus information on where to get natural resource management assistance.

All kids receive a Natural Resource Passport which directs them to individual stations set up throughout the park. Youngsters who visit all the stations will receive a prize at the Friends of Hartwick Pines gift shop inside the Michigan Forest Visitor Center.

There is no fee for this event, but a state park motor vehicle permit is required for entry into the park. The park is located off I-75 at exit 259, north on M-93 three miles. For more information, contact the park at (989) 348-2537.

The DNR is committed to the conservation, protection, management, use and enjoyment of the state's natural resources for current and future generations.
