E-M:/ More on PM 2.5 Episode--Regional Haze and Visibility Degradation

-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Enviro-Mich message from "Alex J. Sagady & Associates" <ajs@sagady.com>
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

My last message discussed the PM 2.5 episode in Michigan and near
surrounding state areas. Here is some more evidence of the physical nature
of this PM 2.5 episode.

As of 12:36 PM 08/03/2005, US Weather Bureau national visibility map is shown
at http://www.sagady.com/stuff/us_vs.gif as produced by http://www.wunderground.com
It shows that presently Michigan and Wisconson have the worst visibility range in the
United States (48 contiguous states) at this hour....only 4-6 miles.

See also poor conditions for visibility at:

http://www.mwhazecam.net/detroit.html [note Belle Isle detail
features obscured as of 12:52 PM as viewed from Cobo Hall]
and
haziness indicated in the distance as 12:52 PM at Seney
National Wildlife Refuge
http://www.mwhazecam.net/seney.html

Milwaukee has a similar severe haze problem presently
http://www.mwhazecam.net/milwaukee.html as does Mayville, WI
http://www.mwhazecam.net/mayville.html

My guess would be that if you were hiking at Pictured Rocks
National Lakeshore right now, you would not be able to see
clear detail of the rock cliffs from downshore. Sleeping Bear would
also have severe visibility degradation for views down the lakeshore.

You can track ongoing visibility using Weather Underground at
http://www.wunderground.com/US/Region/US/Visibility.html

The current vector wind fields show evidence of transport to Michigan and Wisconsin from Illinois,
Indiana and Missouri...
http://www.wunderground.com/US/Region/US/WindSpeed.html

Adverse air pollution conditions occur in Michigan from transport when Michigan
is on the "back end" of regional high pressure to our east....see current
synaptic map at
http://www.wunderground.com/US/Region/US/Fronts.html
