Aren't these are exactly the sorts of responses that the right has been working towards: the buy-in of cynicism towards government in general, and federal government in particular? I guess Louisiana, one of the poorest states (maybe Michigan, once again with the highest unemployment rate in the nation, is not far behind), should have taken care of themselves.

It's not federal government per se; it's profoundly dishonest far right political (and feckless centrist) leadership that contemptuously politicizes good governmental policy, including sound scientific research and other forms of reality-based knowledge. They have been working their damndest to "starve the beast" by cutting taxes for the very wealthiest and dismantling and eroding the public services that worked so successfully during most of the 20th century to benefit us all as a society.

So let's spend $1.5 billion per week for Bush's folly in Iraq, while defunding programs to plan and prepare for the well-understood threat to the Gulf coastline. Congress will be reconvening next week. Number 1 legislative item: repeal of the estate tax to benefit those inheriting estates of > $1 million.

Divide and conquer. It's working!

All we need is a tax on tea.

on Saturday they cut the parish's [i.e. the county] emergency
communications line, leading the sheriff to restore it and post

This is utterly amazing. And to think, this was reported in the New
York
Times. . . .

That would be like Ingham County Sheriff Wigglesworth posting armed
guards at
the Ingham County Health Department to prevent Bush's FEMA from
turning off
the power again.

This all has an eerie ring to it. . .with local governments taking
up arms
against the federal government. . . .is this the shadow of things to
come?
Maybe not in our lifetimes, but when a revolution does come to the
U.S. (something
Moyers and others think inevitable), I imagine that various state
and local
governments will join the opposition. . .
