Volunteers Invited to Collect Native Seeds

The Department of Natural Resources is seeking volunteers to harvest native prairie seeds at 10 state parks and recreation areas during October weekends.

The seeds will be used to restore tallgrass prairie, lakeplain prairie, oak savanna and dune ecosystems throughout southern Michigan. A complete schedule of collection dates and locations is available on the DNR Web site at www.michigan.gov/dnrvolunteers.

The prairie and oak savanna ecosystems, nearly eliminated during European settlement, exist today in small remnants in many Michigan's state parks and recreation areas. Seed collection is a key step in restoring these lost landscapes, but a step that requires many hands, said Ray Fahlsing, DNR stewardship program manager.

"This is an important opportunity to restore and expand these natural ecosystems and preserve them for future generations," said Fahlsing.

Volunteers are asked to bring a clean, empty milk jug to collect seeds, wear sturdy hiking shoes and bring drinking water and sunscreen. Children 8 to 15 years old must be accompanied by an adult.

To sign up for a time or to bring a group, contact Lisa Gamero at 517-241-4789 or e-mail her at gamerol@michigan.gov.

The DNR is committed to the conservation, protection, management, use and enjoyment of the state's natural resources for current and future generations.
