E-M:/ Granholm soft on mercury pollution

Enviro-Mich message from "Alex J. Sagady & Associates" <ajs@sagady.com>

The Granholm Administration's softness on mercury pollution
through its failure to enforce mercury control
technology requirements on an expanding Lafarge Corporation
cement plant at Alpena has now led to a Lafarge lawsuit against
the state. Lafarge argues that it should be allowed to emit even more
mercury on the shores of Lake Huron than the 390 lbs permitted
by MDEQ's air permit for the expansion....saying that it should
be a so-called "science-based" emission limitation.

In this case, "science-based" mercury limits mean using the atmosphere
as a sewer for mercury emissions that could otherwise be controlled with
available technologies.
