Tanya Cabala, formerly Michigan Director of the Lake Michigan Federation, is conducting an Environmental Policy Course in the Muskegon area. Since many of you probably know here, I thought I'd forward the information below.

The Community College, 221 S. Quarterline, is easily accessible from US-31, so people throughout West Michigan may be interested. The first session is October 6. Though it doesn't say so below, you can also attend individual sessions for $19 each according to the college's press release.

ENVIRONMENTAL POLICY COURSE OFFERED AT MCC

Muskegon Community College is offering an environmental policy certificate course this fall for local citizens, members of conservation organizations, and local government officials to introduce practical aspects of environmental policy and decision-making. The course is timely, according to Sally Birkam, director of community enrichment and outreach for college. "The Muskegon area is fortunate to have numerous active environment and conservation groups and local officials and residents interested in working proactively to protect the area's abundant natural resources. We think there is considerable interest by members of these groups and individuals in knowing more about how people can contribute meaningfully to decisions that are to be made."

Participants of the course will learn about the way in which natural resource/environmental decisions are made in the Muskegon area, with a focus on past and current issues and local case studies, in order to provide a comprehensive introductory background on environmental policymaking. The format for the program will be presentation, local panelists and speakers, and group discussions. Participants must attend all four sessions to obtain the certificate.

Instructor for the course is Tanya Cabala of Whitehall, who served as Michigan Director of the Lake Michigan Federation (now the Alliance for the Great Lakes) for 14 years. She is now the owner of Great Lakes Consulting and is a freelance consultant, working primarily for environmental interest groups and agencies in the Great Lakes region. The course is offered as four Thursday night sessions in October, from 6:30 to 9:00 p.m. in the college's Blue & Gold Room. Cost is $69. To register, call 777-0250.
