Michigan Air Quality Forecast

Monday, October 3rd, 2005 through Friday, October 7th, 2005

PM-2.5: 24-hr concentrations are forecasted to remain in the USG range through Wednesday. Levels will fall into the Moderate range Thursday and into the Good range Friday.

Forecast Discussion:
PM2.5 levels already in the USG range across much of the state will remain there until Wednesday. This poor air quality can be attributed to a persistent south to southwest wind flow on the backside of a high pressure area off to our southeast. To our northwest, there is a slow-moving cold front in Canada extending south through eastern Minnesota. A low pressure area will develop along this front finally pushing it from northwest to southeast across Michigan late Wednesday into early Thursday. Before then; however, south to southwest winds will continue pushing unseasonably warm, humid air into the state. Wind speeds look to increase ahead of the front on Wednesday which should stop PM2.5 levels from increase any higher than the middle USG range. But, with this south to southwest wind flow in place through mid-week, poor air quality will remain across the state.

Forecast Summary:
PM2.5 conditions will start improving late Wednesday and early Thursday after the cold front passes and winds change to the northwest. High pressure will be centered to our north in Canada keeping us in a northeast wind flow for the end of the workweek. This should keep PM2.5 levels in the Good range for the first part of the weekend.
