Muskegon's Sportsmen for Youth Receive
DNR Partner in Conservation Award

Sportsmen for Youth, a group of Muskegon volunteers that organizes an annual event that focuses on youth participation in hunting, fishing and other outdoor experiences, received a Department of Natural Resources Partners in Conservation Award at the regular meeting of the Natural Resources Commission in Lansing yesterday.

The group was nominated by a DNR employee in the Parks and Recreation Division based on the organization's 11-year history of organizing the annual Sportsmen for Youth Day at P.J. Hoffmaster State Park in Muskegon. The event is held on the first Saturday after Labor Day.

"Sportsmen for Youth is a strong partner and advocate for introducing young people to hunting and fishing," said DNR Director Rebecca Humphries. "We are proud to honor Sportsmen for Youth for their commitment to our natural resources heritage and for their hard work on the annual Sportsmen for Youth Day at Hoffmaster State Park."

Each year, the event at Hoffmaster State Park attracts more than 1,500 young people who enjoy a trout pond, BB gun range, archery range, wild animal displays and interpretive activities at the park. There also are outdoor equipment displays, food and refreshments and outdoor-related entertainment. The group charges no admission to the event, and youth who participate are awarded prizes.

"More than 1,000 volunteer hours are put in to producing a quality event for young people from around the Muskegon area to come and learn more about the great outdoors," Humphries said. "This event not only generates exposure for the DNR and our state parks, it creates positive memories for the many young people who turn out to participate."

The Partners in Conservation Awards are given out to individuals, organizations and government officials who assist the DNR through volunteer work in the areas of conservation and natural resources management. Nominations are submitted by DNR employees.

The DNR is committed to the conservation, protection, management, use and enjoyment of the state's natural resources for current and future generations.
