Forest Management Advisory Committee to Hold First Meeting Monday

The Forest Management Advisory Committee (FMAC) will hold its first meeting on Monday, Oct. 17, in the 1921 Conference Room on the seventh floor of the Stevens T. Mason Building in Lansing. The meeting will be from 2:30 to 5 p.m.

The newly formed FMAC was appointed in August by Department of Natural Resources Director Rebecca Humphries. The committee will provide broad-based input into the priorities and practices related to forest resources across Michigan. It will assist the DNR with developing recommendations for economic and environmental opportunities related to public and private forest ownership, long-range forest resource and forest recreation planning activities, potential threats to our forest resources, and assisting the DNR in developing a sustainable funding plan for all forest-based responsibilities.

At its meeting on Monday, the committee will address organizational issues and have a discussion on issues facing the state's forest resources.
Eighteen individuals were chosen by Humphries to serve on the committee. They include Steven Arwood, owner of the Arwood Group in Lansing; Joel Blohm, operations manager for Great Northern Lumber of Michigan in Lincoln; William Bobier, president of Earthscape Resource Management in Lansing; William Cook, Michigan State University Extension Service forester and biologist in Escanaba; Leland Crawford, acquisition and merchandising manager for International Paper in Norway; Thomas Dunn, assistant legislative director for the American Motorcycle Association District 14 of Lansing; John Fowler, president of D.T. Fowler Manufacturing of Lapeer; Margaret Gale, dean of the Michigan Technological University School of Forest Resources and Environmental Science in Houghton; Susan Holben, business ombudsman for the Michigan Economic Development Corporation; Mark Janke, senior forester for Menasha Packaging Company in Otsego; Desmond Jones, chairman of Michigan Tree Farm System of Augusta; Daniel Keathley, chairperson of the Michigan State University Department of Forestry; William Manson, executive director of the Michigan Snowmobile Association of Grand Rapids; Frank Ruswick, special assistant to the director of the Department of Environmental Quality; Warren Suchovsky, co-owner of Suchovsky Logging in Stephenson; Sam Washington, executive director of the Michigan United Conservation Clubs; Gordon Wenk, director of the Michigan Department of Agriculture's Environmental Stewardship Division; and Anne Woiwode, state director of the Sierra Club Mackinac Chapter in Lansing. Leanne Marten of Cadillac, forest supervisor for the Huron-Manistee National Forest, will serve as an advisor to the committee.

The DNR is committed to the conservation, protection, management, use and enjoyment of the state's natural resources for current and future generations.
